FOUR/FOUR

A series of posters for the grand opening and various events at a classical music club in Downtown L.A., Four/Four. The mission of the club is to bring more classical music to millennials and Gen-Z and break down elitist sentiments associated with it.

THE PROCESS

Visualizing sound has been an interesting process. For an early concept, I dipped my fingers in different colored paint and played Arabesque No. 1 by Debussy onto my sketchbook.

In another earlier direction of this project, I tied a bunch of string to a fan and took snapshots of the appendages blowing in motion. I then took the stills into Photoshop and manipulated them to look like rippling sound waves.

Elaborating on the concept of sound waves, I used a toy lightsaber to physically draw them out in the dark, which looked striking in these snapshots using slow shutter photography. I went even further by using the lightsaber as a conductor's baton and waving it at 2/4 time, 3/4 time, and 4/4 time. I also waved it like the arm of a metronome.

Inspired by the formation of the 4/4 beat, I created the name and the logo.

I created a corresponding handstamp of the logo.

I also incorporated the language of sound waves into the typography and wristband so that everything felt cohesive.
